Formal Letter

To the bigots who have kept marriage illegal in California,

Marriage is considered by many to be a fundamental human right and is a point of happiness and pride for every culture in the world. Why then, should 5.4% of Californians be denied this most basic human right? This has been a hotly debated point of order in the California Senate for some time and the bill to make homosexual marriage protected by the California Constitution is repeatedly overturned. In a nation that prides itself in providing freedoms to it citizens, and especially in a state where many of the California natives love to revel in how progressive California is, this is a grievance that must not stand.
Gary gates cited the 2000 California census as having shown 5.4% of the population identified as Homosexual, Lesbian, Transgender, or bisexual. (“Same Sex Couples and the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Population: New Estimates from the American Community Survey”, 5). That equates to 2 million Fifty-four Thousand California Citizens. Throughout history Americans have trampled on the rights of others. In the earlier 20th century African American citizens were being oppressed. This is our modern segregation. To the youth of today segregating the African American Portion of our society sounds absurd and outright blasphemous. To the youth of tomorrow those preaching against gay marriage will be seen as the equivalent those that beat and spat upon those black students who were the first to attend a white school, in other words monstrous and lacking empathy. How would you feel if we suddenly as a culture decided that marriage was defined as union between a man and a goat, and your marriage was now invalid?

The typical argument against gay marriage is that it is a union between a man and a woman. This definition was adopted from the biblical variation of marriage, holy matrimony.
